New SYSCID concept paper published in Immunity

With chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs) on a rise they represent an increasing medical burden for society. Associated with a significant degree of long-term disability and increased mortality due to chronic involvement of other organs, such as the lung or the cardiovascular system, therapy currently only aims at dampening systemic immune responses to gain control of the disease but cannot provide a cure.

In this article we discuss the opportunities of a systems medicine approach towards curing CIDs by developing tools to predict the individual patients ‘disease course focusing especially on the prediction of three key aspects of the diseases: early disease manifestation, disease progression and therapy response. With these advances as a goal, SYSCID is presented as a European example of an interdisciplinary effort to bring systems medicine solutions in CID to clinical practice.
